Changing Your Spare Tire: A Step-by-Step Guide

Before You Start: Ensure your vehicle is parked on a flat, stable surface away from traffic. Engage the parking brake and place wheel chocks around the opposite tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

Tools needed: Car jack, Lug wrench, Spare tire/wheel, and Vehicle owner’s manual (for specific instructions and torque specifications).

  • Locate your spare tire, jack, and lug wrench.
  • Remove any hubcap or wheel cover if necessary to expose the lug nuts/bolts.
  • Using the lug wrench, turn the lug nuts counterclockwise just enough to break their resistance. Do not remove them completely yet.
  • Tip: Loosen the nuts/bolts in a star pattern if there are five, which helps distribute the force evenly and prevents the wheel from warping.
  • Place the jack under the vehicle at the designated lift point (refer to your owner’s manual to find this spot).
  • Raise the jack until it supports but does not lift the car. Ensure it is securely positioned.
  • Continue to raise the jack until the tire is completely off the ground.
  • Remove the lug nuts/bolts completely and keep them in a secure place where they won’t roll away.
  • Gently pull the flat tire off the hub and set it aside.
  • Align the spare wheel with the wheel hub.
  • Many factory lug nuts or bolts fit the EZ Spare correctly and are fine to use. If the factory bolts or nuts do not fit correctly, use the ones that came with your spare wheel to secure the spare to the vehicle’s wheel hub.
  • Hand tighten the lug nuts or bolts in a star pattern for even distribution. We include a hex torx key with the bolts or nuts to make this process easier.
  • Lower the vehicle so that the spare tire touches the ground, but the full weight of the vehicle isn’t on it yet.
  • Use the torque wrench and Torx key to tighten the lug nuts or bolts to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended torque specification, which can be found in the owner’s manual or online.
  • Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.
  • Give the lug nuts/bolts one final tighten to the torque specified in your vehicle’s manual.
  • Place the flat tire and all tools back in their designated spot in your vehicle.
  • Ensure the hubcap or wheel cover is replaced if it was removed.

After Tire Change: It is advisable to drive straight to a mechanic or tire repair shop to have the flat tire repaired or replaced. Remember, spare tires are typically designed for temporary use and should not be driven on long-term or at high speeds.

Safety Reminder: Never attempt to change a tire on the side of a busy road. Always try to move to a safe location or call for roadside assistance if it’s unsafe to change the tire yourself.
