Park in a safe location
Slowly steer the vehicle off of the road and park in a safe area. This area needs to be wide enough for you to move around the vehicle without putting yourself in danger of being hit by other drivers.

Turn on your hazard lights
Ensure your emergency flashers are on so that other drivers are aware to take caution when driving past you as you change your flat tire.

Apply the parking brake
Take the foot off of the accelerator and apply your parking brake. This step will keep your car from rolling while you are busy changing out your tire. Be sure to disengage this once you’ve completed all steps.

Tools You’ll Need:
Car jack, Lug wrench, Spare tire/wheel and vehicle owner’s manual (for specific instructions and torque specifications)

Before You Start:
Ensure your vehicle is parked on a flat, stable surface away from traffic.
Engage the parking brake and place wheel chocks around the opposite tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

A Step-by-Step Guide

  • Locate your spare tire, jack, and lug wrench.
  • Remove any hubcap or wheel cover if necessary to expose the lug nuts/bolts.
  • If your vehicle has a hubcap covering the lug nuts, you’ll need to remove it (if your lug nuts are exposed, you can skip ahead to this step) Car jacks usually have a built-in lug wrench. Remove the lug wrench from the jack and use it to loosen the hub cap on the tire that is damaged. Once the hub cap is removed, place it to the side.
Note: If there is anything covering the bolt head such as mud or snow, use an abrasive brush to remove it before using any other tool.
  • After the hubcap is removed and before you use the jack to lift the wheel off of the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with the flat tire. The lug nuts will be located just below the hub cap, and they are usually either hexagonal or round. Place the lug wrench onto each nut and apply pressure to the handle in a counterclockwise fashion. Only loosen the nuts about ¼ to ½ of a turn, do not remove them completely. If you have trouble loosening a lug nut, use your foot or knee to gain leverage on the handle of the lug wrench.
  • Using the lug wrench, turn the lug nuts counterclockwise just enough to break their resistance. Do not remove them completely yet.
  • Tip: Loosen the nuts/bolts in a star pattern if there are five, which helps distribute the force evenly and prevents the wheel from warping.
  • Place the jack under the vehicle at the designated lift point (refer to your owner’s manual to find this spot).
  • Raise the jack until it supports but does not lift the car. Ensure it is securely positioned.
  • Continue to raise the jack until the tire is completely off the ground.
  • Remove the lug nuts/bolts completely and keep them in a secure place where they won’t roll away.
  • Gently pull the flat tire off the hub and set it aside.
  • Align the spare wheel with the wheel hub.
  • Many factory lug nuts or bolts fit the EZ Spare correctly and are fine to use. If the factory bolts or nuts do not fit correctly, use the ones that came with your spare wheel to secure the spare to the vehicle’s wheel hub.
  • Hand tighten the lug nuts or bolts in a star pattern for even distribution. We include a hex torx key with the bolts or nuts to make this process easier.
  • Lower the vehicle so that the spare tire touches the ground, but the full weight of the vehicle isn’t on it yet.
  • Use the torque wrench and torx key to tighten the lug nuts or bolts to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended torque specification, found in the owner’s manual or online.
  • Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.
  • Give the lug nuts/bolts one final tighten to the torque specified in your vehicle’s manual.
  • Place the flat tire and all tools back in their designated spot in your vehicle.
  • Ensure the hubcap or wheel cover is replaced if it was removed.

After Tire Change: It is advisable to drive straight to a mechanic or tire repair shop to have the flat tire repaired or replaced. Remember, spare tires are typically designed for temporary use and should not be driven on long-term or at high speeds.

Safety Reminder: Never attempt to change a tire on the side of a busy road. Always try to move to a safe location or call for roadside assistance if it’s unsafe to change the tire yourself.
